China Eyelid Surgery Boom
Jiashi getting her eyelids done in Shanghai, China on May 21, 2003. Jiashi is receiving new "Western" looking eyelids as a gift from her mother Chen Haihua. Her mother says it will increase Jiashi's future chances of getting a new job in the growing economy of China. The doctor makes four holes in the skin. He removes fat and tissue. Then he uses the loose skin to saw a second eyelid. Dr. Teng penetrates Jiashis eyelids with a needle and black thread as he attaches the western look permanently in her face. The No. 1 procedure by far in Asia is eyelid surgery, a form of blepharoplasty in which a crease is created above the eye by scalpel or by needle and thread, to give the appearance of a wider eye.
