Senegal Girl's Soccer Team

Groups of girls play soccer in the village of Dassilame Soce, Senegal, Thursday, June 22, 2006. The team is made up of young women 9-16 and was begun by a Peace Corps volunteer, Jeff Chatellier, who lived in the village from 2004-2006. Chatellier began the group with a $100 grant when he saw only boys in the village playing ball. While some parents in the village were resistent at first, overall the girls have been encouraged by their parents and continue to be enthusiastic about playing. According to Chatellier, the biggest obstacle to starting the team was finding shorts that the girls can play in, since many wear traditional Muslim dress. During a visit to the village, Chatellier's mother brought shorts for them and "Ball for All" has provided shirts, balls and shoes. "I will play until I get old, because I like it," says one girl.
